Therapy : Shh we don’t say that word!
Hello coffee Lovers,
I hope your coffee is keeping your body and mind warm. Speaking of our minds, let's discuss our mental health. We hate talking about what we are going through on mental status. In one of my other blogs I discuss how therapists and how they take their work hom. This one is about the patients and the lack of patients because of their cultures.
When it comes to therapy in cultures the influence can gain and maintain cultural competence. Which means depending on one’s culture talking to anyone outside of their family or their relationship if frowned upon.
Which I will admit in my head I thought going to a therapist was unnecessary.or made me feel like there was something wrong with me. I didn’t want others to look at me like I was broken. It took me a longtime to realize I do need someone to talk to who was not a friend or a family one who will eb mutual and will not judge me for what was in my heart and mind.
There are 5 reasons why people don't see therapist :
1- Ethnocentrism: other cultures according to preconceptions originating in the standards and customs of one's own culture
2- Stereotyping:A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
3- Psychological barriers: are also affect the human capacity to communicate with others with a logical state of mind.
4- Language barriers:usually occur when two people who speak different languages cannot understand one another, and there is a breakdown in language and communication.
5- Geographical distance: The distance between two points or places is the amount of space between them.not occuring in a face-to-face situations.
6- Conflicting values:cultural heritage and the effects of oppression, racism, discrimination, and stereotyping. Counselors must also seek out additional learning opportunities to improve their understanding of different cultural populations.
There are many excuses for not seeing a therapist but no matter how one may deny it or people may not want you to seek help. You have the choice to at least consider if help is something you can get.
There are a few ways to figure out if you need a therapist, see below:
*Your eating and sleeping habits :eating too much or not enough. Can’t seem to sleep or oversleep.
*No longer enjoy the things that you used to: the things you enjoyed and made you happy you just can’t seem to get that joy back ,no matter how hard you try
*Your emotions are turned up to 12: meaning you are extra sad or extra mad and not sure why.
*Social situations Just can’t do: Your emotions are so upside down you rather not be around anyone at all.
No matter who we are or where we come from, we should always be able to seek help when necessary. Do agree, I agree with all cultures, i can’t say i agree or disagree but if in your culture you cannot find help it's time to seek elsewhere. It doesn't make you less of a person, actually it makes you stronger because you care enough about yourself to say “ i Need help” and that the first step to anything is admitting it. I am team #therapy and it took me a long time to admit that even the best people need someone to talk to.
There are so many places to get help. I have links and information for you below. All I am asking is to click and check them out. See if anything makes you think hmm. Only you can start to make a difference.
